Herbert Hoover Middle School Rules:

Reminders:

-Students are expected to treat members of the community with respect at all times: staff, substitues, other students, and parents.

- Atudents are to respect the property--personal and communtiy--of others .

-No student will prevent a teacher from teaching or a student from learning

-Hats and scarves are not to be worn in the school building. Students who wear hats to schoolmust leave them in their lockers.

-Students remaining in after school must be in an adult-supervised activity,

-Gum chewing is not allowed in school

-Backpacks may not be carried during the school day. Students must unpack backpaks and leave them in their lockers.

-Locker parties are not permitted.

 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

Excused Absence: Absences for the following reasons may be considered excused if the proper procedure is followed and if documentation is presented:

Illness of Child

Death in Immediate Family

Court Summons

Religious Observeance

Authorized work

Authorized Away-From-School Activity

Medical Appointments

Designated State and County Emergencies

Unexcused Absences: Alll other absences are considered to be unexcused. Remeber that family travel is an unexcused absense. However in cases where there are unusual circumstances, a parent may contact the attendance office to request administrative approval of an otherwise unexcused absense. such requests shoudl be submitted in writing at least five days in advance of the anticipated absense. Assignmetns are not provided in advance of an due to family travel. When returning to school the student must arrange with teachers to amke up missed work by the deadline they assign.

Reporting Absenses: When you are absent, your parent or gaurdian should call the attendence office (301)-469-1057 before 10:30 a.m. to let us know that you will not be here. When you return to school, you must give your first period teacher a signed and dated note from your parent/guardian explaining the reason for your absense. Even though your parent/ guardian called the school, you must still bring a written note when you return. If you are absent for five days or longer because of illness, you must bring a doctor's note.

School Hours: The instructional day begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m. First Period begins at 7:55 a.m.If you arrive at school prior to 7:30 a.m, you must report to the cafeteria. Exception: If you have a pass from a teacher or guidance conselor, you may report to the adult/yoom specified in the pass. You must leave the building within of the 2:40 p.m. bell unless you are participating in an activity supervised by a teacher or another adult. At the conlcusion of the activity, leave the building immediately.

Tardiness to School: (ET-excused, UT, unexcused) Tardiness to school is defined as a faliure to be in your First Period calss when the tardy bell sounds at 7:55 a.m. If you artive at 8 a.m, you must sign in with the attendence secretary and present a note from your parent/ guardian. If you do not have a note, you will be considered unexcused. (In the case of medical appointments, you may present a note from your health care professional.) The attendence secretary will give you a pass to class.

Early Dismissals: In order to leave school before the end of the school day, you must have a note from your parent/guardian stating the reason for the early dismissal and the time you are to leave. The note should be given to the attendence secretary prior to Period 1. You must sign out with the attendence office before leaving. Parents or guardians must send written permisson for anyone other than the parent/guardian to pick up a student. All students must be picked up from the main office. Students are not permitted to wait for pick-up outside of the school office.

BACKPACKS: Backpacks may not be carried during the school day. You will need to unpack your backpack int your locker when you get to school each day. Plan your dayso that going to your locker will not make you late to class.

DELIVERIES: If you think some one may bring y our homework, lunch, notebook, etcetera to school for you, please check in the main office between classes or in the cafeteria before the lunch period. Classes will not be interrupted to deliever items to students.

DETENTION: When a student has been assigned after-school detentionby a staff member, the student will be given 24-hour notice unless other arrangemtns have been made. It is the student's responsibility to inform his/her parents of the detention to make necssary transportation arrangements. The student is expected to report to the dentention on the time, time and place that the dentention was assigned by the staff member. A student who is unable to serve detention must bring a signed note from a parent or guardian.

DRESS:Clothes should be neat and clean and suitable for school activities. Clothing that causes distractions from the intrusctional program is not permitted. The following expectations exist for all studetns for health and saftey reasons:

Shoes will be worn at all times.

Shirts and blouses properly buttoned.

Midriffs may not be exposed.

Underwear will not be showing.

Hats, scarves, and bandanas may not be worn during the school day.

Sungalsses and coats must be left in lockers.

HALL CONDUCT: Walk at a moderate pace and keep to the right hand side of the hallway and on the stairs. Running, shouting, whistling, loitering, unnecessary noise are not permitted. If you are out of your assigned class for any reason and not accopmanied by an adult, you must have your teacher sign a pass.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned three to five times a week in all academic subjects and should be considdered the rule rather than the exception. Time and credit devoted to homework will vary with the assignment. Even when there is no required reading or writing assignment, you should review material from each class that was covered that day.

HONOR ROLL: You must have a B average with no grade lower than a C and no more than one C(with an A to balance it), in order to be on Honor Roll, in order to qualify for the Principal's List, you must earn an 'A' in each of your classses.
